Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight fighters Michael Bisping and Kelvin Gastelum battled it out at “UFC Fight Night 122” at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai, China on November 25, 2017. It did not reach the second round.
Marc Goddard served as the referee. Gastelum knocked out Bisping via punches at 2:30 of Round 1.
The loss downgraded Bisping’s professional mixed martial arts record to 30 wins and 9 losses. On the other hand, Gastelum now has 14 wins and 3 losses.
Before facing Gastelum, Bisping lost to Georges St-Pierre. On November 4, 2017, Bisping lost the UFC Middleweight Champion belt to St-Pierre, who had come out of a four-year hiatus, via technical submission via rear-naked choke at “UFC 217” at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, United States.
On December 10, 2016, Tim Kennedy lost to Gastelum via technical knockout via punches at “UFC 206” at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. On July 22, 2017, Gastelum lost to Chris Weidman at “UFC on Fox 25” via arm-triangle choke submission.
On March 11, 2017, Gastelum fought Vitor Belfort at “UFC Fight Night 106.” It was declared a No Contest because Gastelum failed a drug test for marijuana, which resulted to his 90-day suspension and a 20 percent fine issued by the Superior Tribunal de Justica Desportiva do MMA.
Aside from Weidman, Neil Magny and Tyron Woodley are the only opponents Gastelum failed to defeat in a professional MMA bout. Before Kennedy and Bisping, the opponents Gastelum defeated were Jose Sanchez, Yair Moguel, Mike Gentile, Bill Smallwood, Mike Ashford, Uriah Hall, Brian Melancon, Rick Story, Nicholas Musoke, Jake Ellengerger, Nate Marquandt and Johny Hendricks.
