The Philippine Volcanoes men’s and women’s rugby teams won gold medals at the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2024 tournament held in Kathmandu, Nepal from October 4-5, 2024. In the final matches, the men’s team defeated its opponent from Taiwan 27-12 and the women’s team defeated its opponent from India 7-5.
Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2024
The Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) is the governing body for rugby union in the Philippines and the Philippine Volcanoes is the country’s national rugby union team. It’s men’s team won gold during the 2017 Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy and its women’s team won gold during the 2019 Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy.
“We are immensely proud of both our women’s and men’s teams for their performances and dedication,” PRFU president Ada Milby stated. She added that winning double gold at the tournament “reflects the hard work of the athletes, coaches and support staff”.
On October 1, 2024, the Philippines’ Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2024 participants arrived in Kathmandu. On October 3, 2024, the jersey presentation was held at the Lemon Tree Premier Hotel in Kathmandu.
Kai Ledesma Stroem and Harrison Carceller Blake are the co-captains of the men’s team. Their teammates are Dayton Iobu, Donald Canon Coleman, George Rosal Nield, Jake Soriano, Jonel Madrona, Michael Gomez Blatties, Ned Plarizan Stephenson, Rafael Julian Phillips, Reed Santos and Tristan Quirante Leffers.
Darryl Suasua is the head coach of the men’s team. Lalaine Bacus is the team manager and Declan Drake is the physiotherapist.
Samantha Scott is the head coach of the women’s team. Mark Villamora is the team manager and Harry Fardell is the physiotherapist.
Rassiel Sales is the captain of the women’s team and Pearl Opolentisima Kellie is the vice captain. Their teammates are Alana Lee Donaire Grace, Janin Lara Puig, Naomi Kate Palis Stroem, Kayleigh Corpuz Foster, Lauryn Nazareno, Loramhel Mateo, Patricia Mandon Mangahas, Sylvia Tudoc, Takiah-Lani Joy Buchanan and Vanessa Hachiles Cifuentes.
