ALDI is significantly expanding its presence across Alabama, United States highlighted by a major grand opening in the state’s Rainbow City and a growing slate of store conversions throughout the state. As the discount grocery giant continues its aggressive multi-year nationwide push, local communities are gaining greater access to its low-cost, streamlined grocery shopping model.
Founded by brothers Karl Albrecht and Theo Albrecht on July 10, 1946, ALDI is owned by three private family foundations. It started to expand international in 1967.

On September 25, 2025, a new ALDI store was opened in Rainbow City. To mark the grand opening, the store is hosting a series of celebratory promotions and doorbuster incentives for early shoppers. The first 100 customers through the doors on opening morning will receive a complimentary gift bag filled with ALDI-exclusive products alongside a Golden Ticket gift card worth up to $100. Additionally, all grand opening visitors can claim a free reusable shopping tote while supplies last and scan an in-store QR code to enter a sweepstakes for a $500 ALDI gift card.
The Rainbow City launch represents just one piece of ALDI’s broader growth strategy across Alabama. The retailer’s momentum is largely driven by its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, which has enabled the chain to steadily convert select former Winn-Dixie locations into its signature limited-assortment format. By redeveloping these well-known retail spaces, ALDI has rapidly added new locations in major markets like Tuscaloosa and Madison, bringing its high-efficiency store model to thousands of new households.
Known for its cost-saving operational strategy, ALDI maintains significantly lower prices than traditional supermarkets through a uniquely streamlined approach. Store layouts feature smaller footprints—typically around 12,000 square feet—with products displayed directly in their shipping boxes to minimize restocking labor. Approximately 90 percent of the items on shelves are high-quality private-label brands, eliminating brand-name markup. Shoppers also participate in the chain’s famous quarter-deposit system for shopping carts, which incentivizes customers to return carts themselves and keeps staffing expenses low.
As inflation-conscious consumers continue seeking relief at the register, ALDI’s expanding footprint across Alabama offers an attractive alternative for budget-minded households. With multiple grand openings underway and additional store conversions scheduled across the region, the retailer is cementing its position as a major competitive force in the Southeastern grocery landscape.
