Danish designer Maya Bjørnsten has carved out a unique global niche in an industry long centered on symmetry and polished perfection, Her brand Roughdiamonds.dk stands as the only jewelry house in the world dedicated exclusively to uncut, raw diamonds—celebrating natural stones formed deep within the earth over 900 million years ago.

Bjørnsten hand-selects rare, high-grade rough diamonds from the diamond bourses of Antwerp, Belgium. Out of more than 12,000 diamond classifications, her workshop works primarily with premium stones that would typically be cut into traditional fine gems.

“We create every piece by the mantra ‘Love it like it is’. Only naturally beautiful stones are selected – they can be anything from textured and rugged to brilliantly clear,” says Bjørnsten. “Every raw diamond carries its own personality – an imperfection, a color, a shape – which we preserve instead of polishing away its character and history.”

At the boutique’s in-house workshop, master goldsmiths and diamond setters craft each piece to fit the specific contours of the individual gem. Because raw diamonds lack standardized cuts, every setting is custom-designed around the organic shape of the stone.

The brand offers bespoke commissions alongside finished collections, drawing approximately 75 percent of its international clientele from abroad. Commissioned pieces often incorporate deeply personal elements—including custom sourcing specific carats or origins, such as a rare five-carat raw diamond sourced from Botswana to commemorate a couple’s meeting place.

For long-time clients like Rikke Struve, the raw stones carry emotional weight beyond their material value:

“All my diamond pieces are valuable investments – but above all, investments in memories,” says Struve, who wears a green raw diamond bracelet as a personal symbol of hope during her son’s medical recovery.

Roughdiamonds.dk operates under strict ethical guidelines. All raw diamonds comply with the Kimberley Process to ensure conflict-free origins, while the brand’s suppliers hold certifications with the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) to maintain ethical, social, and environmental standards throughout the supply chain.

Bjørnsten operates out of her “Hidden Boutique” in central Copenhagen, the vibrant capital of Denmark. The city is celebrated worldwide for its blend of historic charm, progressive sustainability, and pioneering Scandinavian design. Situated on the eastern coast of Zealand, the city seamlessly bridges centuries-old architecture with modern urban living.

Copenhagen is renowned for iconic landmarks like the historic Nyhavn waterfront—with its colorful 17th-century townhouses—the iconic Little Mermaid statue, and Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest operating amusement parks. Beyond its historic appeal, the city is a global leader in green urban planning, aiming for ambitious carbon-neutral goals through extensive bicycle infrastructure and eco-friendly architecture.

Culture and gastronomy thrive throughout Copenhagen’s distinct neighborhoods, from the royal elegance of Amalienborg Palace to the trendsetting culinary scene in Kødbyen (the Meatpacking District). As the birthplace of New Nordic cuisine, it houses world-class dining alongside cozy local cafes that embody the Danish concept of hygge.
