Bangkok serves as the economic, political, and cultural heart of the nation. Home to an estimated 9 million actual residents—expanding to over 11 million in the official Bangkok Metropolitan Region and more than 17 million across its broader extended urban corridor—it is a dominant megacity that generates roughly one-third of Thailand’s total gross domestic product.

Established as the national capital on April 21, 1782, on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok, known locally as Krung Thep (“City of Angels”), evolved from a historic trading post into a major Southeast Asian hub for finance, healthcare, transport, and international commerce. Its urban landscape reflects this rapid modern development: towering skyscrapers, modern elevated rail systems, and mega-malls stand alongside historic neighborhood canals (khlongs) and centuries-old architectural landmarks like the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, and Wat Arun.

As one of the world’s most visited destinations, Bangkok’s global appeal is driven by its renowned street food culture, vibrant night markets, and major service sector. However, its rapid urbanization also presents ongoing infrastructure challenges, including severe traffic congestion and long-term climate vulnerability due to its average elevation of just 1.5 meters above sea level near the Gulf of Thailand.
