Trujillo, Venezuela
Situated in the western highlands of Venezuela, the state of Trujillo commands attention through its dramatic geography, deep-rooted history, and vibrant traditions. Its territory reaches from the towering peaks of the Cordillera de Mérida down to the fertile lowlands near Lake Maracaibo, offering a striking contrast of misty alpine summits and sun-drenched valleys.
Historically, Trujillo holds immense significance. Founded in 1557, its capital city retains a distinct colonial character. It was here in 1813 that Simón Bolívar signed the historic “Decree of War to the Death” during the struggle for independence.
Beyond its revolutionary legacy, the region is a major hub for religious tourism. It features the Monumento a la Virgen de la Paz (Monument to the Virgin of Peace), a colossal sculpture standing 46.7 meters tall, which ranks among the highest monuments in the Americas.
Driven largely by agriculture, Trujillo thrives on the cultivation of coffee, sugarcane, and mountain produce. Enclaves like Boconó, celebrated as the “Garden of Venezuela,” showcase the region’s rich artisanal heritage and warm hospitality, cementing Trujillo’s status as a compelling destination.
