Food and beverage giant Chobani is navigating a pivotal period of rapid operational growth alongside heightened market scrutiny. On June 2, 2026, the company broke ground on a massive $567 million expansion at its facility in Norton Shores, Muskegon County, Michigan, United States.
At the same time, Chobani is facing a high-stakes legal challenge from competitor Danone over its product labeling claims. The latter is the parent company of Dannon.

In Norton Shores, Chobani is executing the largest industrial expansion project in Muskegon County’s history. The initiative will expand the facility’s manufacturing footprint from 40,000 square feet to 200,000 square feet, retaining 312 existing positions while adding 337 new jobs to bring the total local workforce to 649 employees.
Serving as the primary production hub for La Colombe—the ready-to-drink coffee brand Chobani acquired in 2023—the facility will boost output from 185,000 cases per week to more than 1 million cases weekly to meet surging consumer demand for canned lattes and cold brews. To support this scale, the company projects its annual milk requirement in Michigan will surge from 30 million pounds to 615 million pounds, signaling a major economic boost for regional dairy farmers and agricultural cooperatives.
Chobani’s market momentum coincides with legal friction in the dairy aisle. On June 15, 2026, Danone North America filed a federal lawsuit against Chobani, targeting marketing and labeling claims surrounding the protein content in Chobani’s yogurt portfolio.
According to Danone, Chobani engages in misleading advertising regarding its high-protein product lines, arguing that the claims misrepresent nutrient density and give the brand an unfair competitive edge over rival products like Dannon Light & Fit and Oikos.
Together, these developments highlight the aggressive landscape of the U.S. dairy and functional beverage sectors. As Chobani cements its supply chain infrastructure to dominate ready-to-drink coffee and dairy processing in the Midwest, it must simultaneously defend its core yogurt branding in court, reflecting the thin margin between rapid category expansion and intense market rivalry.
