German-Mexican-American mixed martial artist Justin Ray Gaethje, 37, is the new undisputed lightweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He was the interim champion of the same division.

Gaethje was one of the mixed-race MMA fighters on the “UFC Freedom 250” card. He was born in Tucson, Arizona, United States to a German father named John Ray Gaethje and a Mexican mother named Carolina Espinoza Gaethje.

John Ray was a copper miner. Carolina was a postmaster.

Fighting out of Denver, Colorado, USA, Justin was one of the winners at “UFC Freedom 250” on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C., USA on June 14, 2026. It is the first combat sports event to be held at the official residence and workplace of the president of the country.

There were seven matches on the card. As the interim UFC Lightweight Champion, Justin challenged UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria, 29, of Alicante, Valencian Community, Spain in the main event.

Marc Goddard served as the referee. In the opening round, Justin started strong, connecting with the more impactful strikes.

In the second round, Topuria bounced back fiercely, nearly stopping Justin by repeatedly damaging his body and attempting multiple submissions on the ground. Despite that adversity, the challenger completely seized momentum from the third round onward and punished the defending champion with a barrage of heavy power shots,.

Topuria was left severely bloodied and swollen. The doctor checked on him prior to the fourth round and allowed him to continue.

After the fourth round, Topuria’s corner threw in the towel. After four five-minute rounds, Goddard raised Justin’s hand, declaring the Tucson native the winner via technical knockout due to corner stoppage.

This is the first loss of Topuria, who now holds a professional MMA record of 17 wins and 1 loss. On the other hand, Justin now has 28 wins and 5 losses.
