Luthando “Shorty” Biko is one of the African mixed martial artists competing in BRAVE Combat Federation. For him, the road to international MMA prominence began in the township of KwaZakhele in Gqeberha, Easterb Cape, South Africa. On August 1, 2026, that journey reaches a pivotal crossroads when he steps into the co-main event of the BRAVE Combat Federation event “BRAVE CF 107” at the Arena Burgas in Burgas, Bulgaria.

Established during the apartheid era, KwaZakhele is a community defined by its deep cultural roots, political resilience, and unyielding spirit. The township has evolved from a symbol of structural hardship into a dynamic hub of township culture and economic hustle.

KwaZakhele’s history is inextricably linked to South Africa’s liberation struggle, having produced activists, leaders, and community icons who fought against systemic oppression. Today, that legacy of grit translates into a thriving local atmosphere characterized by bustling street markets, vibrant local eateries serving traditional Xhosa cuisine, and a passionate sporting tradition.

Despite enduring socioeconomic challenges, KwaZakhele remains an engine of talent for South Africa. The township consistently produces remarkable figures across politics, music, arts, and athletics—most notably elite combat sports athletes who carry the pride of Gqeberha to international stages.

Biko will make his third appearance under the BRAVE CF banner against Georgia’s Bidzina Gavashelishvili, with the winner positioning themselves at the front of the line for a shot at the BRAVE CF Flyweight World Championship.

The matchup between Biko and Gavashelishvili is a long-awaited collision originally slated for “BRAVE CF 82” in May 2024 before the bout fell through.

Biko eventually went on to make his promotional debut at “BRAVE CF 93” in April 2025. Now, with the flyweight division reorganized following Muhammad “The Punisher” Mokaev’s title victory at BRAVE 100 in November 2025, the stakes for their rescheduled fight are higher than ever.

“Sometimes the timing makes a fight even bigger,” Biko reflected. “We were supposed to meet before, but now everything means more. This is the kind of challenge every competitor wants.”

A two-time continental champion in Africa, Biko honed his skills under Chris Bright at the Port Elizabeth Submission Fighting Academy (PESFA), emerging as one of the Eastern Cape’s premier combat sports exports.

For Biko, fighting on one of MMA’s most global platforms is about more than personal accolades—it is about validating his roots and representing South African martial arts on the world stage.

“It has never been just about getting here,” Biko said. “It has always been about proving that I belong among the best in the world. This is the opportunity I have been working toward for years.”

“I carry my city with me every time I compete,” he added. “I want people back home to know that dreams from Gqeberha can reach the biggest stages in the sport.”
