Oscar-winning French playwright and filmmaker Florian Zeller is heading back to the Lido with his third feature film “Bunker“. The psychological thriller has been officially selected to premiere in the main competition of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where it will vie for the prestigious Golden Lion.

“Bunker” features real-life power couple Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, marking a major cinematic reunion for the Oscar-winning actors. He stars as an architect who takes on a morally ambiguous and high-stakes commission: designing a luxury survivalist bunker for an ultra-wealthy tech billionaire. The controversial assignment triggers severe friction in his home life, prompting his wife, played by Cruz, to re-evaluate their 17-year marriage. Grounded in contemporary paranoia, the dramatic narrative examines how modern societal anxieties, paranoia, and moral compromises test human relationships.
Zeller, who wrote and directed the project, drafted the screenplay specifically with Cruz and Bardem in mind. The director revealed that his inspiration for the script stemmed in part from the Argentine film “The Man Next Door”, directed by Mariano Cohn and Andrés Duprat, who both serve as executive producers on “Bunker”. The feature incorporates both English and Spanish dialogue and boasts an impressive supporting cast that includes Paul Dano, Stephen Graham, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Mark Gatiss, and Eileen Atkins.
Principal photography for “Bunker” ran from December 2025 through February 2026, with shooting primarily conducted on location in Madrid, alongside additional filming in London. The film is produced by Blue Morning Pictures and MOD Producciones. Distribution rights for North America and Southeast Asia were acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, continuing the distributor’s partnership with Zeller following his acclaimed previous works, “The Father” and “The Son”.
The film marks Zeller’s return to Venice following his 2022 entry “The Son”. His directorial debut, “The Father”, earned six Academy Award nominations in 2021, winning Best Adapted Screenplay for Zeller and Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins.

Zeller turned 47 on June 28, 2026. He was born in Paris, France, which is around 1,117 kilometers away from Venice, Italy.
At the 83rd edition of the Venice Film Festival, “Bunker” will compete in a formidable lineup of international cinema alongside heavyweights such as Danny Boyle’s “Ink”, Werner Herzog’s “Bucking Fastard”, and Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine”. The event takes place from September 2-12, 2026 in Venice.
