Acclaimed Italian filmmaker Andrea Pallaoro is returning to the Lido with his latest feature “The Echo Chamber“, which has been officially selected to premiere in the main competition of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The prestigious festival, running from September 2-12, 2026, will serve as the global launching pad for his deeply emotional examination of memory, passion, and human connection.

Featuring an international star-studded cast led by Oscar winner Alicia Vikander, Coppa Volpi winner Luca Marinelli, and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon, “The Echo Chamber” centers on an intense, lingering romantic relationship. The narrative follows Leo (Marinelli) and Ava (Vikander) as they navigate an intricate emotional labyrinth—constantly coming together, drifting apart, and attempting to find their way back to one another. As Ava’s voice echoes across space and time, the boundaries between presence and absence, care and dependence, desire and obsession begin to blur, exploring whether two people can ever truly free themselves from a shared past.
Pallaoro, known for his delicate focus on psychological interiority and character-driven drama, directed the film from a screenplay co-written alongside Ilaria Bernardini and Ludovica Rampoldi. The project also draws structural and story inspiration credited to legendary Italian auteur Bernardo Bertolucci. Beyond its lead performances, the film boasts top-tier technical collaborators, including cinematographer Diego García, composer Clément Ducol, and editor Paola Freddi.
For Pallaoro, “The Echo Chamber” represents a triumphant return to Venice, a festival that has long embraced his artistic vision. He previously premiered his acclaimed drama “Hannah” on the Lido in 2017—which earned Charlotte Rampling the Volpi Cup for Best Actress—and returned to the main competition in 2022 with his trans-centered family portrait “Monica”. Produced by Indigo Film alongside Belgian co-producers, “The Echo Chamber” marks Pallaoro’s third time competing for Venice’s highest honor.
At the 83rd edition of the festival, “The Echo Chamber” joins an extraordinarily stacked international competition lineup. Pallaoro will compete for the Golden Lion alongside high-profile works including Werner Herzog’s “Bucking Fastard”, Florian Zeller’s “Bunker”, Casey Affleck’s “Company”, Ali Asgari’s “Kami nour”, and Danny Boyle’s “Ink”.

Pallaoro is an alumnus of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, United States and the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita, California, USA. Born in Trento, Italy, he turned 44 on February 6, 2026.
