Rooted in deep cultural connections and strong economic ties, the partnership between Malaysia and India represents a vital regional alliance in Asia.Diplomatic relations began in 1957, reinforced over decades by historical links and a significant Indian diaspora in Malaysia comprising approximately 2.75 million people.

Economic engagement forms a central pillar of their relationship. According to trade data from the Ministry of External Affairs of India, annual bilateral trade reaches approximately $20 billion, positioning Malaysia as one of India’s primary commercial partners in ASEAN. Malaysia is a major exporter of palm oil, mineral fuels, and electronics to India, while India supplies Malaysia with refined petroleum, machinery, organic chemicals, and agricultural commodities. To simplify commerce and lower transaction costs, both nations have enabled local currency trade settlement alongside agreements like MICECA.

Defense and strategic cooperation have also broadened under India’s Act East policy. Joint security dialogues, defense collaboration, and expanding investments in technology and renewable energy reflect a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership aimed at driving regional growth.
